Our motivation

Why Kumpel und Hütte?

In a world that moves ever faster, where families often live far apart and neighbours barely know each other, many older people slip into social isolation. At Kumpel und Hütte we believe life in older age deserves more: more community, more safety, more dignity. Our motivation comes from the wish to create an alternative to the classic care home — a home that warms, connects and supports without losing individuality.

The reality for many seniors

Many seniors live alone, often in large flats once built for a family. The children have moved out; a partner may have passed away. What remains is silence — and sometimes loneliness. On top of that come everyday challenges: Who helps with shopping? Who is there if you fall? Who makes the world a little brighter again?

That reality drove us to think differently. Together instead of alone should not stay a slogan, but become lived everyday life.

The idea

Kumpel und Hütte stands for a new form of living: communal, affordable and human. Our shared homes offer space for privacy and for encounter. Every resident has their own room as a personal retreat. But life also happens where community grows: in the living kitchen, the living, reading or games room, or over a cup of tea in the garden.

We support everyday life where it is needed — whether coordinating with the care service, cooking or doctor visits. We also believe self-determination must be preserved. Nobody is patronised — and care for us does not mean control, but reliability. That creates a network of mutual support that gives safety without taking away independence.

Encounter creates meaning

What keeps confirming our motivation: the encounters, the laughter, the stories. When an afternoon of baking together becomes the highlight of the week, when a walk for two creates a sense of belonging, we know: this is exactly why we do it.

Older age is not a phase of standstill, but of change. And change needs people who listen, who care, who share the journey, who are there. We want to be those people — as companions, as a hut, as a home.

Affordability and dignity

Another central driver is the conviction that good housing in older age must not depend on income. Our housing models are deliberately designed so they remain accessible for pensioners with a smaller income. We work with partners, look for funding options and keep rents fair and transparent. Dignity has no price — but it needs structure.

Shaping the future

Our motivation does not stop at the present. We think ahead: How can we reach even more people? How can the model work in the countryside or in the city? How do we bring young and old people together? We believe Kumpel und Hütte can also be a place of learning and of encounter across generations and cultures.

We work on integrating digital support without overwhelming anyone. We think about creative leisure offers, local partnerships and volunteer programmes. In short: we actively help shape the future of ageing.

Our drive: humanity

In the end, what matters for us is not a system, but the person. Every person wants to be seen, heard and needed. Those basic needs do not end at retirement. Our motivation is to give those needs space — with open hearts, open arms and an open ear.

Kumpel und Hütte is more than a housing concept. It is an attitude. A promise. And a home for the next chapter of life.
